St. Augustine is about 50 minutes south of us. It is actually the oldest town in the United States. It predates James Town, Virginia by about 50 years. It was founded in 1565. We have not toured the area since moving to Florida and I don't know why we didn't see it sooner! It is a gorgeous town with lots of character and amazing things to see. One of the main tour attractions is the Castillo De San Marcos Fort. It was used as a defense mechanism against pirates and other enemies.
We also got to experience real cannon fire and musket firing (it was reenactment no actual cannon balls or bullets were fired). I have never seen any of them used in real life before. The musket fire is what you expect but the Cannon Fire was incredibly loud! You do not want to be too close without ear plugs! I can't imagine how those soldiers ears were like by the end of their lives. All in all however, it was an interesting and fun experience.
I had such a fun time and it was a gorgeous sunny day out. If you are ever near St. Augustine, Florida you must visit! :)
